HARRISON, N.J. — New York City FC defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 Wednesday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium, eliminating the Red Bulls from the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 16. The match was the latest installment of the Hudson River Derby, the heated crosstown rivalry between the two MLS sides. Midfielder Maxi Moralez assisted all three NYCFC goals from set pieces, with headers from Kai Trewin (9′), Raul Gustavo (39′), and Thiago Martins (57′) finding the net off corners. Julian Hall pulled the Red Bulls level at 1-1 in the 14th minute, finishing off a cross from Cade Cowell — Hall’s third Open Cup goal of the season and ninth across all competitions.

Wednesday’s result marked NYCFC’s first-ever win over the New York Red Bulls in a knockout competition, including the Open Cup, Leagues Cup, and MLS Cup Playoffs. NYCFC advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time in club history, where they will face Columbus Crew SC.
